Aww! I remember reading that Steve Martin essay when it first came out. It struck me then and it strikes me now what a brilliant guy he is. I especially remember the part of Mitzi Trumbo because she went to Reed College, my son's namesake. Such a pleasurable read. Thanks!

I read it when it was first published too and loved it so much. Have you read "Born Standing Up?" It is such a beautiful and moving memoir. Steve Martin is able to do funny and poignant so well. My friend/neighbor, Tina who passed away in 2020, used to babysit Mitzi Trumbo. I was going to write about that, but my brain was too cooked.

i have not even finished reading, but just wanted to say you made laugh out loud ALREADY with the "...which meant I was a middle-aged woman, in a full-price shirt, with clogged ears due to allergies. I had clearly made a wrong turn somewhere." THANK YOU! Needed that!! xo

So timely the story about David Ogilvy! Just re-reading Jacques Pépin’s autobiography where he recounts his life in kitchens, among them Le Pavillon in NYC. Perhaps he and David crossed paths?

Ooh! Maybe, though Jacques is much younger. Do you recommend the Pépin memoir? I definitely want to read that Ogilvy book now. Apparently when he opened his agency he hadn’t written one ad! I started to write about that here, but I was too wiped out and had to cut it short.
