Well done with the weightlifting. What an achievement!
My best score on the sit-to-stand test was 18. I tried it twice, once after I got out of bed and once after spending the morning decorating my kitchen. The first time I don't think my body knew what had hit it, so the second one was better 😆.
I can vouch for the loss of muscle tone in your fifties. I even took a physical job to get out of office work in my early fifties, to try to keep fit. Now that I am spending more time writing I have seen a decline in muscle tone. Part of it is inevitable, but your tips for slowing it down are very valuable. I like exercise - I just don't make enough time for it. I just try to keep active with housework, gardening and when possible, long walks.
Good luck with the solo shift on The Friendship Line. Wonderful thing to do - and you get jokes!😆
Lovely to hear your voice H2. Thanks for all the great tips and recommendations. Another sparkling post! ✨
Aww. Thank you, Jules! You always brighten my day. I love that you and I tied on our sit-to-stand test. I'll do it a second time to see if my score changes. It's tiring, isn't it? So great that you garden, do housework, and take long walks. That's the best kind of exercise because you get to have fun or be productive while burning calories. And being outside is so good for our mental health too. Going to the gym is pretty dull if I'm honest and I really have to push myself out the door. I want to hear more about your kitchen decoration project! What does it entail? I'm starting my Friendship Line shift in thirty minutes and I'm a little stressed about all the tech stuff (there are two databases I have to use) but hopefully I won't run into any issues. Thanks for the share too and the cheerleading. You're the best.
I'm sure you will do brilliantly. Keeping my fingers crossed for you.
Oh I've just repainted the kitchen. Nothing exciting but I wanted a lighter colour and now that we are finally into spring I could not put it off any longer.
I will keep doing the test and try to improve. That's a good one.
Honestly - it's such a fab post. I really look forward to your pieces because there is always something informative, useful, funny and great tips on what to watch. Thank you. More! 😀
Oh Hilary I loved this in so many ways. A totally inspirational post. It has been so heartening to see people on the streets protesting. It has lifted my spirits. As this did too. More power to you for lifting the weights. Brilliant work. And Winston Birdchill is hilarious.
Aww. Thank you, Margaret! Your note sparked joy. I'm trying to keep hope alive in these stressful times and your empathy warms my heart. The protests are very invigorating for the spirit and will hopefully motivate our Congress people to do something, anything to stop this madness. And thank you for appreciating Winston Birdchill. The birds really do wear accessories well. I may need to start a series of doctored critter pictures. :)
Winston Birdchill! Turd Reich! Huzzah for protests! 😂 SO much to love in this post! From the sit-stand test, which I am now nerding out on all around the house, to Ludwig! I am heaven with this show because, hello? Puzzles! And then, I love that you are volunteering for The Friendship Line--that is so menschy. :) 💛
Thanks for appreciating my Winston Birdchill pun and the sweet note, Alisa! I made myself laugh with the tiny top hat, but I can’t take the credit for Turd Reich. I cribbed that from a protest sign. 😀I bet your sit-to-stand score is impressive! Love that you’re digging Ludwig too — it’s such a fun show. I’m sad that these British series have so few episodes.
Good job at the gym, Hilary! An inspiration, and that stand-sit test is difficult (couldn't really do more than one or two prior to my hip replacement surgery). I will report back . . . .
Thanks for reading and the encouraging note, Charles! The article said that those average numbers do not apply to folks who have had hip replacements and other surgeries. Hope you’re feeling stronger and free from pain. 💕
I love it! Thank you! More, please! So many p’s! My stand/sit was 16 but I already don’t remember what the good numbers were…
Aww. Thanks for encouraging me to record the newsletter and thanks for listening. That was fun! xo
Your writing is always a treasure! Thanks!
😘Thank you, Heather! Sending hugs to you!!
You realize lipstick at the gym is the biggest lift of all. Showing some true strength, Friend!
🤣Thanks for the lolz, G! Lipstick and no singlets! That’s my motto until I leave this mortal coil.

Thanks for your words. You made me smile.

@Christine Schoenwald Thanks for the restack! You rule!
