This was an excellent essay! Your struggles as a young child mirror my own, especially when I went to an upscale private school for one year as a scholarship kid. Class is something no one wants to talk about, but it "quietly" dictates the way our society functions. I like your California mindset when it comes to fun / loud clothing. It seems like "preppy" styles are back for the New England / Northeast style hustlers. And to that I say nope, no thanks, not interested.
You have an incredible way of describing the people you've known! It makes me want to meet every single one, or just pay even more attention to everyone around me - which is lovely!
