Hiya Friends,
It’s December and, in the spirit of the season, I found out today that Mary—a pal in my tap class—spells her name like this: Merry!
“I’m a child of the ‘60s,” she explained. I took that to mean her parents were flower power hippie types, but Merry, an elfin brunette with a warm smile and very cheerful demeanor, sure suits the name.
And while we’re on the topic of merriness, right now my desk is littered with mailing labels, a stack of holiday cards, stamps, a skinny Sharpie, and a correction pen. The plan is to fill out 100s of cards by hand because I’m old school and desperately trying to keep a dying tradition alive.
So, in lieu of a lengthy Stack today, I’m sharing an article I wrote for Closer Weekly magazine last year about the sassy, stylish, and sensational actress, Myrna Loy—famous for portraying Nora Charles in the Thin Man movies.
Closer Weekly belongs to the People Magazine style of periodicals and sums up its offerings as, “Your ultimate source for breaking celebrity news — get closer to the stars you love!” What I adore about the magazine is that it dedicates many of its pages to the stars of yesteryear. In the case of Myra Loy, I’d always admired her as an actress and yet knew nothing about her activism and independent spirit until I worked on this story.
If you haven’t seen The Thin Man (1934) movie or read the book, here’s the gist—Nick and Nora are a very fashionable, crime-solving and cocktail-swilling couple with an adorable dog named Asta. Watch the clip below to meet the characters and add the book and movie to your to-do list, stat.
MYRNA LOY DID IT HER WAY
That’s a wrap for this week. If you enjoyed this post, hit the ❤️ button, or leave a note in the comment section. I always love hearing from you. xo H2
I love Myrna Loy! I feel like I need to go watch a Thin Man movie now. :) I didn't realize she was in The Best Years of Our Lives, though. One of my pod guests a few months ago gave us some book and movie recommendations, and that was one of them. I'll have to bump it up!
Oohhh I love me a Thin Man movie and only wish they had made more together! Myrna was clearly ahead of her time.
I also love my holiday card tradition although have surrounded to Avery labels the last few years. I wish more folks still sent them because I love receiving them (hint, hint - for anyone listening out there!).
